Zanu PF wins 3 council by-elections

Zanu PF won in three out of five local government by-elections that were held on Saturday in Gweru Municipality, Binga and Mberengwa.

By-elections were held in ward 20 Binga Rural District Council (RDC) and wards 4, 5 and 18 of the Gweru Municipality as well as ward 28 of Mberengwa Rural District Council.

Zanu PF candidate Luyando Muleya won in Binga RDC ward 20, polling 945 votes against Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)’s Crispen Munkuli who got 546 votes.

In ward 5 Gweru Municipality, Kwanisai Mafa Mafa of Zanu PF beat CCC’s Leon Ndahwi with 556 votes against 472, while Sithethindaba Zhou (Zanu PF) polled 726 votes against Nash Nkomo (CCC)’s 81 in ward 28 of Mberengwa RDC.

CCC won the ward 4 Gweru Municipality with Martin Chivhoko polling 643 votes against Gibson Chingwadza (Zanu PF)’s 300 votes while Manyundwa John Mananaevhu (CCC) polled 250 votes to beat Walter Makwalo (Zanu PF), who got 182 votes in ward 18 of Gweru Municipality.

By-elections in some Binga wards were called off by the High Court following candidates’ violation of a section of the Electoral Act.

By-elections in wards 6, 8, 10, 15 and 23 of the Binga Rural District Council were called of following an urgent chamber application by Collen Mudenda, challenging the nominations of some candidates

Mudenda approached the High Court challenging the nominations of John Simunene Sikabotu, KIngson Mpofu, Mathias Mudenda, Joseph Mwembe and Wilson Siampolomba on the grounds that they were disqualified in terms of Section 119(2) (h) of the Electoral Act.
