A 14-year-old girl from Chivhu is already a mother after being raped by a prominent Johanne Masowe leader.
George Madamombe, 47, on November 25, 2022 appeared before the Chivhu Magistrates’ Court to answer to rape charges and was remanded in custody.
It is alleged that the minor left home for church on a Thursday while her mother only joined her on Friday.
Prosecutor Tawonga Masaire said Madamombe insisted that the girl remained behind for some special prayers until Saturday.
“Madamombe called the mother on Sunday morning and invited her to the church. She only arrived late when the service was over, intending to take her child so that she could prepare her for school on Monday.
“Madamombe refused to release the girl and told her that she was disturbing the child’s church lessons,” Masaire told the court.
After this, the mother did not see her daughter until she made desperate efforts to get her back.
The mother and the 14-year-old re-united after the girl had given birth and had a three-week-old baby.
The mother is said to have made a police report earlier in March at Masasa Police Station in Chivhu but Madamombe was only brought before the courts last week.
This is not the only case of the abuse of a minor that has come up lately. In a tragic development, a 12-year-old girl died while giving birth in Masvingo, while a nine-year-old Tsholotsho girl, who was impregnated by her 13-year-old cousin, gave birth in Bulawayo. In yet another incident, a Bindura girl was abused by two 17-year-olds and is now seven months pregnant.
