Five suspects appeared before the Mbare Magistrates’ Court today facing charges of dealing in dangerous drugs and unlawful possession of restricted medicines after detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics section in Harare intercepted a truck loaded with dagga and Broncleer cough syrup worth thousands of dollars.

The court heard that on August 23, detectives, acting on a tip-off, intercepted a 10-tonne truck at Kuwadzana Extension in Harare around 1am.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 20 sacks of dagga weighing 306kg and 49 boxes of Broncleer cough syrup, each containing 50 bottles of 100ml.

Four of the suspects, who were in the truck, were immediately arrested, while the fifth was later picked up during a sting operation along Robson Manyika Road in Harare after allegedly receiving part of the consignment.

The accused were identified as Paradzai Kamungeremu ,43, of Kuwadzana Extension, Harare; Givemore Tsavayo ,38, also of Kuwadzana Extension; Nkosikhona Moyo ,35, of Nketa 7, Bulawayo; Tafadzwa Mapika ,20, of Kuwadzana Extension, Harare; and Faith Matekede ,37, of Southview Park, Harare.

Prosecutors opposed bail, arguing that the seriousness of the offence, the potential prejudice to society, and the risk of absconding justified the continued detention of the accused. The court remanded the five in custody pending further investigations.

The State alleges that the consignment was destined for illegal distribution across Harare and other urban centres, with detectives still tracking possible accomplices linked to the syndicate.
