The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Engineer Benjamin Kabikira, today toured the National Heroes Acre to assess progress on the expansion project being carried out through a partnership between the Government and Chinese contractor Hualong Construction.
He was accompanied by the Ministry’s Chief Director of Public Works, Engineer Magwaza, as well as representatives from Hualong Construction and Tensor Construction, the two firms undertaking the works.
The project involves the construction of two new wings, with Hualong Construction working on the East Wing, while local contractor Tensor Construction is responsible for the West Wing.
Both contractors indicated that major works are expected to be completed within the coming weeks.
Engineer Kabikira said the project demonstrated the importance of partnerships in safeguarding the country’s heritage.
“The National Heroes Acre is a sacred national monument and a place of remembrance for our gallant sons and daughters who fought for independence. This expansion, made possible through collaboration, will ensure we continue to honour them with dignity,” he said.
He added that government remains committed to the upkeep of national monuments.
“As the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, our responsibility is to maintain and expand these sites so that they reflect the honour befitting our national icons,” said Engineer Kabikira.
Engineer Magwaza said the expansion would improve both the functionality and appearance of the shrine.
“This project is not only creating additional burial space but also enhancing the overall infrastructure and visual appeal of the Heroes Acre, ensuring it remains a proud national landmark,” he said.
