Ashdown Park Woman in Court for using Counterfeit US Dollar Notes

A 46-year-old woman from Ashdown Park, Harare, has appeared in court facing fraud charges after she allegedly attempted to deposit counterfeit United States dollar notes during a transaction at an Econet Wireless outlet.

Maude Tiriwepi was arraigned before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts following her arrest on November 25, 2025, after she reportedly tried to make an agent-to-agent cash-in transaction using fake currency.

According to the State, represented by prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu, Tiriwepi approached cashier Chiedza Nyajono at Econet’s Hebert Chitepo Avenue branch and requested to deposit US$800.

The court heard that she handed over a mix of notes, including several counterfeit US$100 bills bearing serial numbers QK15614963B and PE06624643E. Only one of the notes was confirmed to be genuine.

Nyajono became suspicious and used a counterfeit detection machine, which flagged seven of the eight bills as fake.

The matter was immediately reported to the police, leading to Tiriwepi’s arrest. The total potential prejudice to Econet was US$700.

Tiriwepi is expected to return to court on December 18, 2025, for further proceedings.
