Harare Informal Transport Women Push Back Against Extortion

A small but powerful protest unfolded at Copacabana on Wednesday as a group of women vendors confronted rank marshals accused of extorting them daily. Videos shared on X show women demanding an end to US$0.50–$1 daily “fees” imposed without council approval. Several said they now earn less than US$5/day, yet still face harassment and threats. Council officials later confirmed the levy is illegal.  No arrests had been made by Thursday, but the women vowed to escalate to Town House.
