Gweru Motorist Fined for Negligent Driving After Pedestrian Hit

A 23-year-old Gweru man has been convicted and sentenced for negligent driving following a road traffic accident in which a pedestrian was struck in Mkoba.

Kundai Mukwena, who was driving a Nissan Bluebird, hit the pedestrian as she walked with her mother near the Roman Catholic Church in Mkoba 18, Gweru, on May 14, 2025, at around 7pm.

The impact threw the victim onto the vehicle’s bonnet before she fell to the ground.

The court heard that Mukwena was travelling at an excessive speed and failed to keep a proper lookout, neglecting to take reasonable steps to avoid the accident.

Mukwena pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined US$200 or, in default of payment, 60 days’ imprisonment. He was also ordered to surrender his driver’s licence for endorsement.

The magistrate said the conviction should serve as a warning to motorists to exercise caution, particularly in residential areas with high pedestrian traffic.
