
A 50-year-old South African national has been sentenced to an effective three years in prison after he was convicted of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs by smuggling 5.23kg of dagga into Zimbabwe.
Maila Mashabane David appeared before the Beitbridge Magistrates' Court, where he was found guilty and sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
The court heard that on May 25, 2026, at around 6:00 pm, police officers deployed along the Limpopo River acted on a tip-off that David had illegally entered Zimbabwe through an unauthorised crossing point while carrying dangerous drugs.

Officers tracked him down and intercepted him before conducting a search.
During the search, police recovered 5.23kg of dagga concealed in four cobs wrapped in black plastic and sealed with cellotape inside a navy blue satchel he was carrying.
The court heard that the recovered dagga had an estimated street value of US$523.
David was convicted of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs and sentenced to an effective three years in prison.
