A police officer who blackmailed a woman demanding payment US$500 for her to avoid prosecution got himself arrested.

Clever Daika, 59, of Mainway Meadows, Waterfalls appeared before magistrate Tafadzwa Miti at the Harare Magistrates' Court accused of extortion.

The state through Zebediah Bofu alleges that, on March 10, 2023, along Fife Avenue, Daika went to Pamela Glenda and introduced himself as a member of the CID Commercial Crimes Division and accused her of dealing with dangerous drugs.

He told her that her name was going to be submitted to Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission for arrest and seizure of her property as it was acquired through the proceeds of crime, making it tainted.

Daika said he could stop Glenda’s prosecution if she paid him US$500.

Glenda reported Daika to the police and a trap was set up when Daika was given the money.

Miti remanded Daika to today (March 15).
