Henry Mugove Muringani, a Public Prosecutor, has been convicted for criminal abuse of office after preparing bail applications of inmates on false charges.

The NPA alleged that Muringani unlawfully prepared bail applications on behalf of inmates in the period ranging from January 2022 to March 2022.

He prepared the bail applications for Tatenda Tawanda Mutengo, Bill Tirihama, Edwin Muchangwa and Prosper Chidaushe whose bail applications had initially been dismissed by the High Court due to the seriousness of the charges that they were facing.

“The former prosecutor prepared the bail applications on false charges which were less serious, making the inmates eligible for bail. The inmates presented the applications before the High Court appearing as self-actors,” said NPA.

NPA said it is reported that the accused person communicated with the suspects’ relatives, who in turn paid him various amounts ranging from US$200 to US$500.

His conduct was contrary to his duties as a public officer as he was supposed to defend and oppose the bail applications of the inmates as instructed by his principal.

Meanwhile, the Harare Magistrates’ Court said Muringani will appear in court on April 3, 2023 for sentencing.
