Michael Mashiri

A man has taken his wife and in-laws to court, accusing them of trying to kill him.

Castain Gusha, 49, Fungai Chivige, 44 and Define Gusha, 25, appeared before magistrate Taurai Manuwere at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts accused of attempted murder.

The complainant in this matter is Last Charuma, 38 of Lusaka, Highfield.

The State, alleges that on June 29, 2023 and at around 2000 hours, Charuma was home with his father-in-law, Castain and his wife, Define when his motherin-law, Fungai arrived.

While in the house, Castain and Fungai started shouting at Charuma, accusing him of abusing their daughter.

Suddenly Castain struck Charuma once on the head with an iron bar he was holding.

Charuma fell down and Define pressed him to the ground when he tried to stand up while Fungai hit him with a wooden stick all over his body.

Castain went on to strike him with an iron bar several times on the left hand and twice on the left leg while Fungai stabbed him with a screw driver several times on the legs.Define continued to press him to the ground.

Define allegedly took US$563 and Itel P36 phone from Charuma’s pockets.

Charuma later fell unconscious since he was bleeding.

He later gained consciousness and requested Define to take him to hospital.

The following day in the morning, Define hired a truck which took Charuma to the hospital.

While at the hospital, they were requested to report the matter to the police and be issued with a police report.

Define ordered Charuma to falsely report that he had been assaulted and robbed by thieves while on his way from work, since she was afraid of being arrested.

Charuma complied since he was in pain and wanted her to ferry him to hospital and he had no means of communication since his phone had been taken by her.

Charuma was taken to ZRP Machipisa where he falsely reported after Define threatened to leave him.

He was given a police report and Define took him to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he was admitted and treated.

Charuma later informed his relatives about what had actually transpired when they visited him at the hospital.

After his discharge from hospital, his relatives accompanied him to Machipisa Police Station to file a report.

He was referred to Sally Mugabe Hospital for a medical affidavit.

When he returned, he discovered that Define had taken away the doctor’s notes and went away with them.

He contacted her requesting for the hospital papers since the doctor wanted to complete the medical affidavit using his notes and she refused to give him.

Charuma sustained a deep cut on the head, which needed eight stitches, two fractures on the left ankle and left shin and he also sustained a fractured left hand.

Define, who appeared in court with a child, was given a US$20 bail while her parents were remanded in custody.
