Minister of Land, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Resettlement Permanent Secretary John Basera confirmed the export of 40 000 tonnes of maize to East Africa and he is also targeting central Africa.
Wheat exports are also being considered.
He said: “We are also targeting central Africa. We have enquiries in countries in central Africa and we will be exporting over 40 000 tonnes of cereals or maize to East Africa this year. We are also looking at the prospects of exporting wheat this year.”
Zimbabwe was at one point the bread basket of the region and the country harvested over 2.3 million tonnes of maize and 300 00 tonnes of traditional grains in the last farming season.
The government is targeting a cereal production of 3.7 million tonnes to ensure national food and nutrition security.
