A man, who allegedly lit a gas stove which blew the entire room, injuring his wife and two step-children, following a domestic dispute, has been arraigned before the court.
Desmond Chendambuya, 40, of Highfield New Police Camp, is accused of attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
The complainants in this matter are Melody Ncube, 45, Romeo Ncube, 26, and 17-year-old, Romeo and the 17-year-old, who are step-sons to Chendambuya.
The State alleges that on November 4, at around 0000 hours, all the complainants were at home when Chendambuya arrived.
It is alleged that he asked for his wife’s phone, demanding that she unlock it by removing her password.
She refused and smashed her phone on the ground.
A squabble ensued between the two and it is alleged that Chendambuya took his five-year-old daughter out of the dining room and locked the door from the inside.
Chendambuya went into the kitchen and opened a 9-kilogramme gas tank while the complainants were in the room. He took a cigarette lighter from his pocket and ignited it.
A fire broke out from the gas tank, filling the whole room.
It is alleged that he went on to open the window and jumped out from the second floor of the flat.
The complainants followed and managed to escape through the window.
The three complainants are said to have sustained injuries.
They filed a report at ZRP Machipisa and were referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital where they were admitted.
Chendambuya is alleged to have run away from the scene but was later arrested and detained.
It was discovered that he had injuries that had been caused by the gas and was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he is currently admitted.
The property that was damaged includes a fridge, sofas, electrical cables, ceiling, window panes and various kitchen utensils.
He was remanded to November 20.
