MSD warns of heavy downpours countrywide

The Metrological Services Department has warned of heavy rains starting today January 11 up to Wednesday January 17 with lightning and hailstorms expected.

In a statement, the MSD notes that precipitation amounts in excess of 50mm are expected along the main watershed.

“The ITCZ which has been active over the northern parts of the country is expected to combine with a cloud band which is moving from the west to the east covering the whole country and as a result the combined effect of the two should result in precipitation amounts in excess of 50mm in areas along the main watershed,” MSD said in a statement.

The department has also predicted localised heavy rains with lightning and hailstorms in some places.

“Watch out for blown-off roof tops, flash floods and fallen trees due to strong winds. Open drains and potholes that may be covered in water,” MSD added.

The public is therefore urged to stay indoors and limit travels and take caution on the roads.
