Mujambajecha sets out to scuttle Mwonzora presidential bid

Opposition MDC-T party on Sunday unanimously nominated its leader, Douglas Mwonzora, as the sole party candidate in next year’s general elections.

The decision was made by the party’s National Council ahead of the party’s 5th Ordinary Congress slated for this December.

In a statement, the MDC-T announced Mwonzora was now their duly elected presidential candidate for 2023 polls.

However, Norest “Mujambajecha” Marara has challenged the decision at the High Court.

Marara is arguing that the MDC-T constitution was not followed when Mwonzora was nominated.

“On 20 November, 2022, 2nd respondent was purportedly nominated and elected unopposed as the President of MDC, the purported meeting was unlawful as it was done contrary to the provisions of the MDC constitution and the proposed election was unlawful in that it was made improperly constituted party organs owing to unlawful appointments made by the 2nd respondent,” reads the court papers.

Since the death of former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC-T has been involved in serious fights which have since forced Nelson Chamisa to form a new outfit, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

At the Extraordinary congress, former Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe claimed she was rigged by Mwonzora and assaulted by party thugs.
