A commuter omnibus driver who took off while a police officer hung on his vehicle’s door trying to stop him has appeared before magistrate Munashe Chibanda charged with attempted murder.
Tafadzwa Mugabe, 27, of Waterfalls, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with attempted murder.
The complainant in the matter is Rodney Praise Mutauri Munyanyi, 27, of Gletwin, who is a police officer based at ZRP Machipisa.
The State alleges that on June 21, Munyanyi was on a night motorised patrol with Sergeant Kanyandura, constables Chirobe, Bhanya and Mangoma using a station car.
While driving doing their patrols, they saw Mugabe parked in the middle of the road with his Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus.
Munyanyi went to Mugabe and told him to pull off the road as he was blocking the way for other motorists.
Mugabe raved his Nissan Caravan as if he was pulling off the road and remained stationery.
Munyanyi discovered that Mugabe was still parked and turned back for him to ask why he was still parked in the middle of the road.
When Mugabe saw Munyanyi coming back he drove his car at high speed towards Munyanyi.
In an attempt to avoiding being run over by cars which were coming from another direction, Munyanyi jumped onto and hang on the driver’s door, asking him to stop.
Mugabe did not stop and continued to drive while Munyanyi hung on the door.
Mugabe shoved Munyanyi and drove away.
Munyanyi fell down and landed on the ground on his right side.
Mugabe did not stop and the other officers chased after him.
When he discovered that he was being chased, he ran into a nearby bush, leaving his commuter omnibus and was eventually arrested.
Chibanda ordered Mugabe to deposit ZWL$100 000 as bail.
