PAZ calls for installation of traffic lights at Mabvuku turn off

The Passenger Association of Zimbabwe has written to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development over the Mabvuku turn-off along the Harare-Mutare highway, which is a major black spot which needs urgent attention.

In the letter, PAZ National Coordinator Tafadzwa Goliati said their concern follows numerous accidents some fatal, which have happened at the turn-off hence the need for corrective measures.

"It should be noted that there has been a number of accidents which seem to have gone unnoticed but it is high time we feel that urgent interventions are needed as we are continuing to witness an increase in the number of people who are getting killed or being seriously maimed.

"A recent case in point is a head-on collision involving a pirate taxi and private vehicle which resulted in the death of at least four passengers.

"As PAZ, we are calling on the ministry to consider installing traffic control systems (robots) or any over-speeding limiting mechanisms to minimize traffic, cyclists and passenger accidents at the dangerous intersection.

"PAZ welcomes any positive deliberations which the ministry can initiate to help minimize carnages on the spot and on any other national roads," read the letter.

The letter was also copied to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and the Civil Protection.

The Harare City Council recently revealed that plans to install traffic lights at the turn-off have been approved as it was added that a contractor has been appointed to carry out the project.

One hopes that the project will be given top priority status as it has been talked of numerous times but nothing tangible has been done yet.

And as sadly as the project is being stalled, people continue to die and some being injured as a result of accidents which many road users believe can be avoided.
