A man, who was taken to court accused of contravening the Immigration Act, has been given bail.

Austin Lenard Ray, 50, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with contravening the Immigration Act.

The State alleges that on February 19, at around 1230 hours, Ray arrived at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, Harare.

He was ordered to deposit US$300 bail.

It is alleged that at the Immigration checkpoint, he tendered his American passport to immigration officer Mupanduki Moreblessing, intending to apply for a holiday visa.

After perusal of the passport, it was discovered that Ray was issued with a Notice to Visitor to leave the country on or before February 7, 2024.

He did not have a written authorisation to enter the country from the Minister as required by the law.

As a result, Ray was denied entry and was placed in the Immigration temporary holding cells pending deportation.

It is alleged that on the same date, he then made his way into the country illegally without a valid permit.

In the process, it is alleged, Ray tampered with the locking system of an electric door and escaped from the holding cells.

He was later lured back to the Airport through his host Thomas Muredzeri and was subsequently arrested.
