Wheat farmers will expedite harvesting of the 2022 crop following government’s mobilisation of 248 combine harvesters as farmers race to beat the rainy season.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa addressing a post-Cabinet briefing yesterday said farmers had harvested about 23 000 hectares of the crop, translating to 31 percent of the total planted area.

The minister said: “Wheat stocks stand at 159 706 tonnes, and this will provide 6,3 months’ cover at a consumption rate of 21 000 tonnes per month.

Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services chief director Obert Jiri recently said production was delayed due to the late maturity of the summer season crops.

“But everything is in order and our farmers are on the ground, making sure the grain is harvested before the rains,” he said.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Deputy Minister Vangelis Haritatos had said then that government deployed over 110 combine harvesters to 20 centres countrywide to facilitate timely harvests with, urging farmers to take advantage of the government intervention.

The latest addition of combine harvesters will augment the equipment available for use by wheat farmers.
