Scholar dies after drowning at school vacation party

 A schools vacation party turned fatal when a Mutare scholar drowned in a swimming pool at the home at which he was merry-making with colleagues.

 Mutare Police confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as 18 year-old Parson Kupakwashe Msekiwa.

Acting provincial spokesperson for ZRP Manicaland province, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said Msekiwa, who resided in Chikanga Township was on Saturday evening having fun with friends at a home in Fairbridge Park.

As they were swimming, he dived into the deep end of the pool and could not swim through.

Though his friends managed to pull him out and attempted to rescusitate him, he faced breathing problems from which he eventually succumbed to on admission to Victoria Chitepo provincial hospital.

The matter was reported at Mutare Central Police Station.

Asst Insp Chinyoka confirmed a post-mortem had since revealed that Msekiwa died due to drowning and that there was no foul play suspected.

“We are urging the public to always have someone experienced at their swimming pools so that they will be readily available to rescue and offer the necessary help to those who will be swimming and might need help,” said the police spokesperson in a statement.
