A Chitungwiza man has appeared on court facing impersonation charges after he was arrested wearing ZRP Support Unit uniform.
Trust Chikiwa, 24, of Unit G, Seke, Chitungwiza was arraigned before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates' Courts following his arrest at Copa Cabana bus terminus.
The State alleges that on April 16, 2023 at around 11:40 hours, Sergeant Reyson Davison and other members of the Harare Central Police District Reaction team were at Copa Cabana bus terminus doing police patrols and arresting law offenders.
They then saw Chikiwa who was wearing a police uniform, Riot Gear Number 5, surrounded by a crowd of people.
Sergeant Davison and his team then went to the crowd with an intention to rescue Chikiwa.
When they did an interview on him they discovered that he had no police identity card, national identity card or anything that was useful to identify him as a police officer besides the uniform he was wearing.
Chikiwa was then arrested for impersonating a police officer.
When the police made further investigations, it was noted that Chikiwa was once arrested for the same crime.
The police uniform was subsequently taken away from him.
Mangosi opposed his bail and advised accused to apply for bail. He returns to court on April 20.
